Specifying the wrong pipe material for a UAE plumbing system is not a hypothetical risk; it’s a recurring problem that shows up at commissioning, in service, and during the remedial work that follows. A PPR system installed in a cold water supply application where UPVC was specified works, but at a higher cost and without the design justification. UPVC: Cold Water, Drainage, and Pressure Infrastructure

Cosmoplast High Pressure UPVC pipes and fittings are widely used in the distribution of cold water under pressure, air conditioning drain systems, piping networks for swimming pool facilities and rainwater utilization, and cold fluid circulation in industries. What UPVC is not suitable for:

Temperature is the boundary. UPVC has a service temperature limit of approximately 60°C, not suited for hot water distribution above that threshold. PPR: Hot and Cold Water Distribution

Cosmoplast PPR pipes and fittings are manufactured according to German DIN standards with sizes ranging from 20mm up to 160mm. The outstanding temperature rating up to 95°C and pressure rating up to 25 bar make the PPR system the ideal solution for hot and cold potable water piping networks in residential and commercial buildings, heating systems, chilled water networks in air conditioning systems, transport of a wide range of chemicals in the industry, and piping networks for rainwater utilization systems and swimming pool facilities.

Why does PPR dominate hot water plumbing in UAE residential and commercial buildings?

PPR is joined by heat fusion: a fusion welding tool heats both the pipe end and the fitting socket simultaneously, and when both surfaces reach the correct temperature, the pipe is pushed into the fitting and held until the joint solidifies. No adhesive, no solvent, no chemical. The joint becomes one continuous piece of the same material as the pipe wall. For a hot water system in a Dubai apartment building running at sustained temperatures, this joint integrity is what makes PPR the standard specification.

PPR’s resistance to scaling and biological growth is also a practical consideration in UAE water supply conditions. Unlike metal pipes, PPR doesn’t corrode or develop the internal scale that reduces flow over time.

What PPR is not the right choice for:

Underground burial and large-diameter infrastructure. PPR is a building plumbing material; the size range tops out at 160mm and it isn’t designed for underground pressurised distribution networks at infrastructure scale. For those applications, UPVC or HDPE is the correct specification.

PE-X: Flexibility for Complex Layouts and Extreme Temperatures

Cosmoplast PE-X pipes are manufactured to German DIN standards from cross-linked high-density polyethylene material. PE-X pipes are used for long-term applications in extreme levels of cold and hot fluid transmission. These pipes require few directional fittings due to their high flexibility and strength. PE-X pipes can be used for applications ranging from sub-zero temperatures up to 93°C (200°F).

Where PE-X has specific advantages over PPR:

The flexibility of PE-X is its defining characteristic. Where PPR requires a fitting, an elbow, a tee at every direction change, PE-X can be bent around corners and through structural elements without fittings. This reduces the number of joint points in the system and speeds installation in complex layouts where routing through finished or semi-finished spaces requires tight bends.

PE-X is also the specification for underfloor heating systems; the pipe is laid in continuous loops under the screed, and the flexibility allows the loop pattern to be installed without multiple joints that would otherwise be buried inaccessibly under the floor finish.
